Having the right cage for your birds is important for their wellbeing, as is the right accessories and toys to keep them active, interested and engaged. As a member of your family you will want to do what's best for them and we can help. Not only can we give you all the advice you require, but we can supply everything you need, from cages, feed and accessories.
Toys are used as mental diversions and tend to encourage physical exercise and break boredom. Toys should be selected with safety of the bird in mind. “Chewable” items can include branches, pinecones, natural fibre rope, and soft white pine.
Many enhancements can be provided to occupy the bird’s attention. Some birds like to tear paper and enjoy a cardboard roller, some like a piece of corn on the cob and jelly pots whilst others like to pull and tug.
Other ways that birds get enrichments include training, foraging, and human interactions.

The largest cage that can be accommodated in the home is what is recommended. The cage must be strong enough to resist bending or dismantling by the bird, made of nontoxic material, and designed for safety and ease of cleaning. Things to consider when purchasing a cage is the size of the species of bird and the length of the tail feathers making sure there is plenty of space and the bird can stretch there wings. Birds with longer tails would need a taller cage to prevent splitting and damage to the tail, where a bird with a wider wing span would need a wider cage.
Perches can be purchased, or made of clean, pesticide-free natural wood branches such as Willow and Java. Perches provide a place to stand, and for some species that love to shred and destroy, a source of enrichment. Perches can also be a source of calcium, they can also be made of concrete. The advantage of this is keeping nails and beaks in condition. Perches should be replaced frequently when they become worn, soiled or damaged. Place perches on opposite sides of the cage for the bird to remain active. More perches can be provided for more agile climbers, like parrots. Perches should be placed so that droppings do not fall into water dishes.

Newspapers, sandsheets, oystershell grit, cat litter, woodchip, sand or other plain cage liner maybe preferred over wood shavings. There really is no right or wrong, providing you use a non harmful material. Some paper and other material contain hidden things such as lead, so do be sure to check. Newspaper, although is printed using ink most if not all, now print using a non toxic ink making this completely safe. Cage liners are important. They generally used to keep the bottom of the cage clean so protects the tray.
One of the biggest parts of looking after your feathered friend is keeping them alive. Feeding is the most vital thing to get right. There are loads of feeding dishes and cups on the market and normally ones that come with the cage as standard are more than satisfactory. For those that like to add extra water drinkers in different shapes and sizes are available, as are bowls. Things to consider when purchasing is the size of your bird and the material of the bowls you are purchasing. Birds like to chew so plastic and lightweight material isn't recommended if it's a large bird.

Many birds benefit from the availability of a retreat inside the home. Sometimes it's a cage or a spot that gives a sense of privacy and space. Not every bird will live in a cage and for those that have birds free flying inside, security is crucial. Be mindful of the dangers of doors, windows and surrounding areas, furniture and real or artificial plants. Cages are a brilliant way for keeping your feathered friend safe at night and whilst your out. Supervision is highly recommended when free flying inside the home.

If you are adding to your collection of birds do be mindful of potentially needing a larger cage or multiple cages.
